the marmite experiment

As this marks the week that Dom is going to get Niamh's British passport, he thought it might be a good time to have her try marmite. Who knows, maybe its going to be part of her exam to become British, "can she eat marmite? Love it or hate it?"

Marmite is definitely an acquired taste, to say the least. It's actually kind of shocking the first time you taste it. It's quite bitter, and is often eaten with toast. If your Dom, its often eaten with toast, cheese and butter. But it can also be used in broths and casseroles, I'm told.

In its original form, marmite comes from brewer's yeast used to ferment sugars into alcohol -- while this doesn't sound particularly good, its actually very healthy for you and is full of vitamins. The Australians have a version called vegemite, which has a less sticky consistency, but is very very similar. People are die hard fans of one or the other, rarely both.

This was Niamh's reaction...

Shuddering at our first bite

Refusing the second bite, with a shudder for effect

Screaming when there is no more - maybe she liked the bread?
