Grieving with Chinese characteristics

Today kicks off the three days of mourning for the victims of last weeks' earthquake. To mourn properly, the Chinese flags will all be flying at half-mast. The flag raising ceremony this morning in Tiananmen square was televised, and we were able to watch the guards come out of the forbidden city with the flag and raise it. It was really something to see, even though I only saw it on TV at work in the break room. There wasn't a person in there who wasn't glued to the TV.

In addition to this, Chinese media are mourning in black and white - literally. Most Chinese media are printing their publications with the covers only in black and white. This isn't limited to print press either, major Chinese portals including Sohu and Sina have their hompage only in black and white.
