mastering chopsticks

These are the super cute chopsticks we bought Niamh in Beijing, which she has never really had an interest in using.
The other night, Ayi and I went out to dinner with Niamh. We chose a Taiwanese place down the road, which consistently has good food and quick service.

They always start you off with an appetizer of boiled peanuts, delicious, but not the easiest thing to eat with chopsticks. Naturally, this is the first time Niamh has expressed an interest in using chopsticks, and demanded to eat with them - shunning her spoon.

So, my China-born daughter, learned to first use chopsticks in Singapore with boiled peanuts nonetheless. As if learning to use chopsticks wasn't challenging enough, the restaurant only had plastic chopsticks (much more slippery and difficult to use compared to wooden chopsticks which have better grip).

Step 1: get a grip

Step 2: show those peanuts who is boss (or at least have a sense of humor about it)

Step 3: adjust grip, steady and lift off

Step 4: celebrate your success!

she holds her chopsticks all the way at the bottom like i do-- and I've only recently been told that's the wrong way, so if those chopsticks training wheels aren't going to use, i may buy em off you.
