Firing up the wok for a good cause

Last Friday I went with my former boss to a charity event for the Sichuan earthquake disaster. Normally, I find these types of events a little stuffy, and not what you would normally want to do on a Friday night. However, this one proved me wrong.

An old colleague of Dom's, Jen Lin Liu, just opened up a small cooking school in the hutongs of Beijing, called Black Sesame. As a way to launch her school and promote her new book, Serve the People: A Stir-fried Journey Through China, she held an event with food and wine, with all proceeds going to the Earthquake relief. It was small and intimate, only big enough to hold 20 people. With the open kitchen, we were able to watch Chef Hu and Teacher Wang do their magic. In honor of Sichuan, the food was naturally Sichuanese. All the bests were served, my favorite being the twice cooked pork.

Private and group lessons are available, for more information email blacksesamekitchen@gmail.com. I would totally recommend it, it was great food and ambiance. The most fun fund raiser I've ever been to, and for an important cause. I went home feeling good, and not just from the wine...
