from florida with love

One of the best things about being in Florida for the week with Niamh sans ayis, was that we got a much needed chance to reconnect as mother and daughter. Simple things that most parents relish a break from, such as cooking for and feeding their child, putting them to bed, and of course, getting up with them at 6 am - are all the things this working mom doesn't normally get to do. It was nothing short of fabulous!

An exciting thing was introducing Niamh to grits, which she looooved. See, she's a southern' girl at heart!

Also fun is that she is learning to feed herself, with some success. She's wearing a lot of what she eats, but having fun trying to use the spoon and eat with her hands, which until this trip, she hadn't shown much of an interest in.

We learned that Niamh likes blueberries, but not so much Papaya. She likes green beans, grits and thinks that applesauce is pretty much the best thing in the world.

We also learned that she loves to be in the water, but doesn't like it if you dunk her (mom's fault - I thought that was still the school of thought on teaching kids to be comfortable in the water -- apparently this just induces what can only be known as the baby monkey grip of death, where she climbs up my chest in the pool and clings to me like a little monkey).

Other lessons: she likes dogs, but not as much as cats. She likes to drink juice, and she gets little beads of sweat on her nose when she is hot. She's extremely easy to take out places and do things with. There is a special trick to getting her to fall asleep, and that she doesn't like St. Augustine grass, but she's ok with the golf course variety. Sand is weird, and she likes to take off her shoes by herself, usually while out shopping.

These are the amazing things I learned about Niamh while in Florida - the most important one being, that sometimes, she just wants her mommy. I feel the same way!

Here's wishing Dom and Niamh come back from England soon, Mommy misses them both like crazy (but obviously, is glad they are there!).
