On our recent trip to England, I began to feel more comfortable getting around on my own, meaning I no longer needed a local escort comprising of my mother in-law, my husband or my brother in-law. Yay! Graduation to being able to ride the rails on my own!
The down side of this was the understanding of exactly how expensive it is to ride the rails...
When complaining to a Beijing-based British friend about how it costs me about $15 US dollars to go the equivalent of 20 miles, she put me on to this video about how Londoners get ripped off by the rails and the underground.
Too funny...
But seriously, this was a shocker for me, coming from China where it costs next to nothing to ride the subway and the buses. Not only that, during events like the Olympics, the subway was FREE to Olympic ticket holders, to encourage the use of public transport.
I was shocked to learn that it would cost me about 30-35 dollars a day just to commute into London for work, and that's before you consider what you need to get around once you are in London, tube/bus, etc.
Still, it IS pretty great there!
