Snow Day!
Last month we had a flash snow in Beijing, which normally enjoys an extremely dry climate. We woke up one February morning and the ground was covered in snow, it was amazing! We didn't even see it coming, and didn't know that it was going to snow. (My husband and I live in a constant state of weather-gambling. We never know the forecast, we do the often unreliable 'look out the window' check, only to be dressed for warm weather and get outside and find there's a arctic breeze sweeping through town. Once downstairs, there is no going back up to the flat either! I'm not sure why we do this, maybe because we don't watch Chinese TV, but it always seems to mystify me when foreigners in China know the weather forecast, online I know, I know...).
Anyway, after recovering from my initial shock (an excitement at knowing it would be cold out!), I got the camera and my new snow boots on and went downstairs with Niamh and the Ayi (nanny) to check out the snow. (The nanny was trying to take her out herself for her first snow experience, and was not about to wait for me to go -- which led to the 'crazy mommy outside in the snow in her flannel pajama pants tucked into knee high bright blue snowboots' look - but this is another story).
Despite almost being left behind and probably providing our apartment complex with something to talk about for a few days, it was so worth it to be there. The look on her face was priceless. Surprisingly, the coldness and wetness of the snow wasn't the big shock for her, but rather the crunching sound her little boots made when she walked on it.
The snow only lasted about 4 hours before turning into black slush, but Niamh enjoyed it!
By the way, I'm fully aware I'm a month late posting this! Just proving once and for all that corporate moms don't necessarily 'do it all'. Living proof!
